A twelve-year-old Labrador named Otis came into my exam room on a Tuesday afternoon carrying two jars of joint chews his owner had bought within a month of each other. One was the brand her breeder recommended. The other she’d bought because it was the top result when she searched “best joint supplement for dogs” and had 40,000 reviews. She wanted to know which one to keep. That’s the differential I actually work through in practice, and it’s rarely as tidy as “vet-recommended” versus “internet-approved.”

The short answer: neither label — “vet-recommended” or “best seller” — tells you what you need to know on its own. What separates a defensible recommendation from a marketing win is whether the product has verifiable third-party testing, a glucosamine/chondroitin or omega-3 dose that matches what was used in a real trial, and a manufacturer willing to show you the paperwork. Some best sellers clear that bar. Some vet-endorsed products don’t, because the endorsement was never independently checked.

Here’s the differential I run before I trust any front-of-package claim. Is the veterinarian named, or is it “recommended by vets” with no attribution? Is there a disclosed relationship — a paid partnership, a referral fee — or is this an unpaid clinical opinion? And critically, did the recommending vet ever see a certificate of analysis (COA), or are they repeating what a sales rep told them at a conference booth?

None of that is cynicism for its own sake; it’s the same discipline I’d apply to any unverified history in a chart. A vet’s name on a bag is a credential, not a data point. The credential matters, but it doesn’t replace the two things that actually determine whether a supplement does anything: whether the labeled dose matches a dose that’s been studied, and whether independent testing confirms the label is telling the truth about what’s in the jar.

The National Animal Supplement Council is the closest thing this category has to an accountability structure. Member companies pass a third-party facility audit, maintain adverse-event reporting, and submit to independent product testing — and the yellow NASC Quality Seal on the label is how you spot them without calling the company yourself. It isn’t proof of efficacy. It’s proof that somebody outside the company is checking the manufacturing and the labeling claims, which is a meaningfully different — and lower — bar than “this ingredient works,” but it’s the bar most best sellers never clear.

What the dose on the label is actually supposed to be doing

This is where I want to work the differential on the two most common actives, because “glucosamine and chondroitin” and “omega-3s” get treated as one interchangeable joint-support category on shelf, and they are not.

Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are the older, more familiar combination, and the evidence is genuinely mixed — I won’t pretend otherwise. A PubMed: randomised double-blind, positive-controlled trial found dogs on glucosamine/chondroitin showed statistically significant improvement in pain and weight-bearing scores by day 70, though the response was slower to appear than with a prescription NSAID. Other work has found no significant difference from placebo over shorter windows. The honest structure/function read: glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may help support normal joint cartilage function in some dogs, the response is not universal, and it takes weeks to months to see change — which is exactly the kind of finding that gets lost when a label just says “supports healthy joints.”

Omega-3 fatty acids have a cleaner evidence trail for structure and function support. A dvm360 writeup of a double-blind, multicenter trial reported that by day 42, dogs on fish oil showed roughly 50% improvement in crepitus, pain, and joint effusion measures versus essentially no change on placebo — and a related trial run at an EPA dose near 69 mg per kilogram of body weight per day. That’s the number worth checking against your dog’s actual supplement: many joint chews list total fish oil weight, not the EPA/DHA content, which makes it functionally impossible to know if the dose is anywhere near what was studied.

That’s the crux of the differential. A best seller and a vet-recommended product can contain the identical active ingredients. What decides which one is defensible is whether the dose on the label is high enough to matter and whether you can trust the label at all.

I’ve watched this play out with a nine-year-old Golden Retriever, Maple, roughly 68 pounds, whose owner switched her from a bestseller chew to a differently dosed omega-3 product after Maple started hesitating before jumping into the car — something the owner first noticed on a cold morning in late fall, three visits before it came up in conversation. We didn’t change anything else in her routine. Over about ten weeks the owner reported Maple was back to jumping onto the tailgate without the pause, and taking stairs at her normal pace after resting. I want to be precise about what that is: one dog, one owner’s observation, not a controlled result, and I can’t tell you the fish oil caused it versus the season changing or her weight shifting a pound or two. But it’s the kind of change I ask owners to track — gait after rest, willingness to jump, time on stairs — because those are the observable markers that actually tell you whether a supplement is doing anything, regardless of what the label or the review count says.

Reading the COA instead of the review count

A best seller’s review count measures purchase behavior and repeat-buy psychology — palatability, packaging, price point, marketing spend. None of that is nothing; a dog that won’t eat the chew gets zero benefit from whatever’s inside it. But review volume tells you nothing about whether the jar contains what the label says, at what purity, with what contaminant testing.

A certificate of analysis is a third-party lab report confirming actual ingredient identity, potency, and contaminant screening (heavy metals, microbial load) for a specific batch. Reputable manufacturers will provide one on request, sometimes by lot number, sometimes as a standing document on their site. If a company won’t produce one, or hides behind “proprietary blend” language on the dosage panel so you can’t calculate milligrams per ingredient, that’s a bigger red flag than the absence of a vet’s name on the box.

Short version: no COA, no verifiable dose, no deal — regardless of star rating.

Where the two categories actually overlap

None of this means best sellers are automatically suspect or that “vet-recommended” products are automatically sound. Plenty of high-volume online products are NASC members with clean COAs and doses that track the literature; plenty of vet-endorsed products are legacy brands whose formulas haven’t been updated against newer dosing data. The category label on the shelf is not the variable that matters. The manufacturing accountability and the dose are.
