Why “core” means something different in a quadruped

A dog’s core isn’t a six-pack analog. It’s the transverse abdominis, multifidus, and the deep epaxial muscles running along the spine — the ones that stabilize the trunk between the front and rear limb “engines.” When that stabilization is weak, a dog compensates by shifting more load onto individual joints during turns, jumps, and stops. Cavaletti poles work differently: spacing them just wide enough that a dog must lift each paw deliberately builds proprioceptive awareness, the sense of where the limbs are in space, which tends to decline with age and after injury.

Where nutrition fits, and where it doesn’t

I’ll say this plainly, because it’s a question I get in exam rooms constantly: no supplement replaces the mechanical work of rebuilding trunk stability. Exercise is the intervention; nutrition is the terrain it’s built on. That said, the ingredients most associated with joint comfort do have a legitimate, if narrower, role to play alongside a strengthening program, and it’s worth being precise about what the evidence actually supports rather than overselling it.

Chondroitin has been studied for its effect on synovial fluid, the substance that lubricates joints under load — a 2026 paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science notes it “supports healthy synovial fluid homeostasis.” Glucosamine HCl’s evidence base leans more toward cartilage protection at the cellular level: a review in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science describes its ability to “prevent experimentally induced cartilage degradation in vitro.” Green-lipped mussel powder has a different mechanism again — anti-inflammatory rather than structural — with a 2026 Nutrients study finding that mussel-derived compounds “alleviated paw swelling in rats and reduced serum levels of rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) antibody, and pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-17” in a rodent model.

None of that is a substitute for the sit-to-stands. It’s context for owners of dogs with existing joint sensitivity who are starting a strengthening program and want to know what’s realistic to expect from a supplement running alongside it — support for the joint environment, not a shortcut around the muscle work.
