How Many Walks a Day Does a Dog Need?

It was a Tuesday evening consult, a seven-year-old Labrador named Otis, sixty-eight pounds, brought in because his owner noticed he’d started “thinking about it” before jumping into the car. Nothing dramatic — no limp, no yelp — just a half-second pause he hadn’t had a year earlier. The owner’s question wasn’t really about the pause. It was about walks: they’d read that two walks a day was the standard, so they were already doing that, and they wanted to know if they should be doing more, less, or something different now that Otis was slowing down. That’s the question I get more than almost any other in an exam room, and it’s rarely as simple as a number.

The short answer: most healthy adult dogs need somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes of walking a day, split into one or two sessions, with the exact number shaped far more by breed, age, and joint status than by any universal rule. A young Border Collie and a senior Bulldog are not the same animal wearing different coats — they have different cardiovascular capacity, different joint loading tolerance, and different thermoregulation. Treating “two walks a day” as a fixed prescription misses the point of why we walk dogs in the first place.

Why frequency matters less than load

Walking does two jobs at once: it’s cardiovascular conditioning, and it’s mechanical loading on cartilage, tendon, and bone. The first job scales with duration and pace. The second scales with impact, surface, and repetition. When owners ask “how many walks,” they’re usually really asking about the first — energy, boredom, bathroom breaks — but the joint-health answer depends on the second, and that’s where a lot of well-meaning routines go wrong.

A single 45-minute walk on pavement isn’t mechanically the same as three 15-minute walks on grass, even though the total time matches. Splitting activity into shorter, more frequent sessions tends to reduce peak joint loading per session, which is one reason multiple shorter walks are often the better default for dogs carrying extra weight, recovering from an orthopedic issue, or simply getting older. It’s not that one long walk is dangerous — it’s that the math changes once a joint is already inflamed or arthritic.

What actually changes the number

I tell owners to think in three variables rather than one fixed target.

Age. Puppies need frequent, short bursts of activity rather than long structured walks — their growth plates are still open, and repetitive high-impact loading before skeletal maturity is a real risk factor, particularly in large and giant breeds. Adult dogs in the 1–7 year range generally tolerate 30–60 minutes daily well. Senior dogs often do better on shorter, more frequent walks that keep joints moving without overloading them in a single session — this is where the “how many” question usually gets more interesting than the “how long” one.

Breed and build. Working and sporting breeds (Labradors, Border Collies, German Shorthaired Pointers) often need more total activity to avoid destructive boredom, not just for joints. Brachycephalic breeds — Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies — need shorter, cooler sessions regardless of age because of airway limitations, not joint limitations. Large and giant breeds carry more cumulative weight through the hips and elbows per stride, which is part of why hip and elbow dysplasia are so breed-concentrated.

Joint status. This is the variable most walk-frequency advice skips entirely, and it’s the one I spend the most time on with owners of middle-aged and senior dogs. A dog with early osteoarthritis often does better on two or three shorter walks than one long one, because pain and stiffness build with sustained loading and shorter bouts let inflammation settle between sessions.

Where supplementation fits into the walking conversation

I don’t think about joint supplements as a replacement for exercise management — they’re a complement to it, and only when the evidence supports the specific ingredient and dose. Glucosamine and chondroitin remain the most studied joint-support ingredients for dogs, and there’s real mechanistic evidence behind both: glucosamine HCl has been shown to help prevent experimentally induced cartilage degradation in vitro, according to a review in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science, while chondroitin has been associated with supporting healthy synovial fluid homeostasis in a study published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science. Neither of those findings means a supplement will change how many walks a dog can tolerate — that’s a claim I won’t make from this evidence — but they do describe plausible mechanisms for why some owners see steadier mobility in dogs on a well-formulated joint product alongside an appropriately adjusted walk schedule.

Green-lipped mussel is the other ingredient I get asked about most, largely because it shows up in so many joint chews. The strongest data I can point to is preclinical: research published in Nutrients found that mussel-derived compounds alleviated paw swelling in rats and reduced markers of inflammation, including TNF-α and IL-17. That’s an animal-model inflammation study, not a canine mobility trial, and I’d rather be precise about that gap than let the ingredient’s popularity imply more than the data shows.

If you’re trying to work out whether a specific joint product is worth adding to a dog’s routine, the label and the certificate of analysis matter more than the marketing copy — dose per serving, sourcing, and whether the ingredients on the label actually match what’s in the jar. A case that stuck with me

A few years back I worked with a nine-year-old Golden Retriever, Daisy, whose owner had kept her on the same routine since puppyhood: one long 50-minute walk every morning, rain or shine. Daisy had started lagging on the back half of that walk, and by the time she came in, she was reluctant to take stairs at night. We didn’t change the total minutes much — we split the walk into a 25-minute morning session and a 20-minute evening session, moved part of it onto grass instead of sidewalk, and had the owner watch specifically for how Daisy moved the next morning rather than how she performed mid-walk. If I had to give one number, it would be this: two walks a day, totaling 30–60 minutes, is a reasonable default for a healthy adult dog of average size. But I’d rather owners walk away with the variables than the number — age, breed, and joint status should be doing the real work of setting the schedule, and the way a dog moves the morning after a walk tells you more than any fixed rule can.

So the more useful question isn’t really “how many walks does a dog need” — it’s “what does my dog’s body tell me the day after this one?”
