How to Modify Exercise When Your Dog's Arthritis Flares Up

A flare doesn’t usually announce itself. It shows up as a dog who hesitates before the third stair instead of the first, or who takes two tries to get onto the couch where one used to do it. In my practice, the owners who catch a flare early are almost never the ones who saw a limp — they’re the ones who noticed their dog got quieter after the walk instead of during it, or started declining the evening loop they used to pull toward.
I want to answer the practical question first, then explain why: during an arthritis flare, you don’t stop exercise, and you don’t keep the same routine either. You shrink it, slow it, and change its shape for a stretch of days to weeks, then rebuild.
Why “just rest him” is the wrong default
Total rest sounds protective, but joints that go still for days tend to come back stiffer, not better — muscle around an arthritic joint is doing real stabilizing work, and losing it during a flare makes the next flare more likely, not less. The counterargument, and it’s a fair one, is that some flares are painful enough that any movement looks cruel. That’s real. What to cut immediately
Cut anything that loads the joint suddenly or asymmetrically. That means:
- Off-leash running, fetch, or chasing another dog
- Jumping — onto furniture, in and out of the car, over obstacles
- Stairs taken at speed, or repeated stair sets

What to keep, and how to shrink it
Keep leash walking, but restructure it: three or four five-minute walks on flat, grippy ground instead of one twenty-minute loop. Frequent, brief, and boring is the goal, not impressive distance. Watch the dog’s gait after the walk, not just during it — a dog who moves fine for the first ten minutes and then stiffens on the way home is telling you the session was too long, even if nothing looked wrong in the moment.
Swimming is worth considering once the acute pain has settled, because it lets a dog move a joint through range without the ground-reaction force of walking. A flare I remember clearly
One dog I worked with — a nine-year-old Labrador mix, close to 70 pounds, whose owner ran him most mornings before work — went from his normal three-mile route to refusing the driveway within about four days. The owner’s first instinct was to push through it, thinking a stiff dog just needed to warm up. I’ll weigh what a supplement can realistically do for diet, mobility, and recovery honestly: these ingredients are structure/function tools for the joint environment over weeks and months, not rescue medicine for a flare that started three days ago. If your dog is mid-flare, the priority order is veterinary pain control first, exercise modification second, and a well-dosed joint supplement as a longer-term piece of the maintenance plan — not the other way around.
Rebuilding after the flare settles
Once your dog is moving through a normal day without visible stiffness — no hesitation on stairs, normal willingness to get up after resting — you can start adding time back, roughly ten percent more distance every few days rather than jumping straight to the old routine.
